Redeemer’s University Leads the Fight Against Climate Change: A Commitment to SDG 13

At Redeemer’s University, our dedication to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change is woven into the fabric of our institution. In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 – Climate Action, we are taking concrete steps to reduce our carbon footprint, promote renewable energy solutions, and raise awareness about the urgent need to combat climate change.

Our university recognizes that immediate and collective action is crucial in addressing the adverse effects of climate change. Through innovative research, strategic partnerships, and community-led projects, Redeemer’s University is actively contributing to global climate goals.

Tree Planting Initiative: A Powerful Solution to Climate Change

In a recent article by renowned climate scientist Professor Tom Crowther from ETH Zürich, tree planting was described as "the most powerful solution in the fight against climate change." Professor Crowther emphasized that trees can capture carbon from the atmosphere and store it for generations, making them a vital tool in the global effort to mitigate climate change.

With this view in mind, Redeemer’s University, under the leadership of Professor Anthony Akinlo, has taken a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions by collaborating with the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) to plant 8,000 eco-friendly trees across the campus. These trees, which include economic, medicinal, fruit, and ornamental species, will not only enhance the beauty of our campus but also play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and improving air quality for generations to come.

During the official tree planting ceremony, which was attended by the university’s Principal Officers, members of the Tree Planting Committee, and community leaders, over 5,000 seedlings were planted near the university’s dam and along key pathways such as the new girl’s hostel block and the Faculty of Engineering. The project aims to continue expanding this effort until the end of the rainy season, with plans to establish a botanical garden that will serve as a community park and environmental learning center.

Dr. Ernest Durugbo, Chair of the Tree Planting Committee, explained that this project marks a major milestone in the university’s commitment to environmental preservation. The committee has urged all community members to take an active role in protecting the newly planted trees and emphasized that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure their survival and growth.

Recognizing Leadership in Sustainable Energy: Dr. Ngozi Chinwa Ole, Sheroe of Energy

In addition to our tree planting efforts, Redeemer’s University is proud to celebrate the achievements of Dr. Ngozi Chinwa Ole, a distinguished member of the African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER). Dr. Ole was recently honored with the prestigious Sheroe of Energy accolade for her pioneering work in sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Ole’s contributions to renewable energy technologies have propelled ACEWATER to the forefront of the energy sector, with a particular focus on advancing sustainable energy in Nigeria and beyond. Her groundbreaking research has not only reduced energy-related emissions but has also inspired countless individuals to pursue careers in the energy sector, particularly women. Her recognition as a Sheroe of Energy shines a spotlight on the vital role women play in leading innovation and driving the transition toward a more sustainable future.

This recognition of Dr. Ole serves as a testament to the power of research and innovation in combating climate change. Her work, in alignment with the goals of SDG 13, emphasizes the importance of transitioning to low-carbon energy sources and finding innovative solutions to address the climate crisis.
